The fossil quarry is located above Eichstätt on the Blumenberg with a wonderful view of the baroque bishop's town, the Willibaldsburg and the Altmühl valley.
At Blumenberg, collectors have always had particular luck when it comes to searching for fossils. Over 800 different types of fossils have been found here: a treasure from prehistoric times! Among these finds, an original of the rare prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx became particularly famous. Magnificent beaked fish and extraordinary dragonflies were also recovered from the limestone layers - among the finds was even a fish that was fossilized with its prey in its mouth. Hobby collectors will not come across any Archaeopteryx in the fossil quarry - but they will find ammonites in their unmistakable snail shape or feather stars - pretty relatives of modern starfish. Anyone who finds something on the Blumenberg can take their fossil gem home with them: a piece of prehistoric times as a souvenir of the Altmühltal Nature Park.
A life-size Allosaurus welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Blumenberg fossil quarry: it is 14 meters long and 4.5 meters high!

The fossil quarry for hobby collectors is located on the Blumenberg near Eichstätt, right next to the Marienstein children's village. From Ingolstadt: B13 towards Weißenburg - turn left at the "Wegscheid" - follow the signs to the quarry. From Weißenburg: on the B13, shortly after Rupertsbuch, enter the roundabout and leave in the direction of Eichstätt - turn right at the next opportunity - follow the signs to the quarry. From the A9 motorway (Altmühltal exit): drive towards Eichstätt - shortly before Eichstätt turn right towards Weißenburg - turn left towards Weißenburg to the roundabout - leave the roundabout in the direction of Eichstätt - turn right at the next opportunity - follow the signs to the quarry. For the sat nav: enter Kinderdorfstraße 1! For hikers: From Eichstätt Stadt train station, the signposted "Fossil Trail" theme trail leads to the quarry (circular route 9 km).
