The Museum KulturLand Ries (formerly Rieser Bauernmuseum Maihingen) is a regional museum run by the Swabian district and occupies two extensive, listed buildings of a former monastery:
The monastery brewery and the elongated monastery economy.
The total exhibition area is approximately 2,200 m².
In addition to the diverse permanent exhibitions, attractive special exhibitions offer an interesting insight into the rural Ries culture.
Maihingen on the edge of the Ries Basin, 15 km north of Nördlingen, is famous for its former monastery. It was founded in 1472 as the St. Bridgets Monastery, reoccupied by the Minorites in 1607 and abolished in 1803. The baroque monastery complex with the magnificently furnished church and the surrounding farm buildings still forms an attractive ensemble today.
During the museum season, events such as the potato festival or demonstrations and museum educational offers, which often also invite participation, attract numerous visitors.
A small museum field is planted with historical crops (flax, spelt, earlier potato varieties).
