Living museum in the medieval Nikolauspflege
In recent years, a new museum has been built in Ellwangen in the building of the medieval Nikolauspflege at Haller Straße 9, directly on the B 290, which was opened at the end of September 2001: the Alamannenmuseum Ellwangen. Using important archaeological finds from all over southern Germany, the museum presents an overview of five centuries of Alamannic settlement from the 3rd to the 8th century AD.
The focus is on the unique excavation finds from Lauchheim, just a few kilometers upstream from the Jagst. Since 1986, not only the largest Alamannic cemetery in Baden-Württemberg to date with valuable grave goods has been excavated there, but also the associated Alamannic settlement with a manor house and several richly furnished court burial sites.
The excavations carried out by the State Office for Monument Preservation in Baden-Württemberg are only just being scientifically evaluated and have never been shown in such detail before. In the Alamannic Museum in Ellwangen, the time of the Alamanni is brought back to life in many different ways. The following key topics will be examined in particular depth, with research results, some of which will be presented to the public for the first time:
- Weaving and textile crafts among the Alamanni
- Woodcraft of the Alamanni
- Alamannic gold and silversmith work
- The Alemanni as the first Christians in southern Germany
Original archaeological finds
In addition to numerous original archaeological finds, the Alamannic Museum also features life-size displays of various Alamannic life situations, interactive media with screens and moving images, and numerous exhibition elements that you can touch and participate in.
The museum garden with the medieval St. Nicholas Chapel behind it is also integrated into the museum concept, for example with a reconstructed granary from Lauchheim and a vegetable garden from the Alemannic period.
The museum tour, designed by archaeologist Andreas Gut, begins on the ground floor with a partially reconstructed Alamannic pit house from Lauchheim with a loom. A continuous staircase that opens up to the roof connects all three exhibition levels. While the ground floor focuses on the early Alemannic period, the time of the migration of peoples, the upper floors are devoted to the so-called Merovingian period, when Alamannia was a Frankish duchy.
Among the special finds exhibited in the Alamannic Museum are gold leaf crosses made of thin gold foil, which are considered to be the first Christian symbols in southern Germany, as well as the so-called dead trees (tree coffins), some of which are decorated with double-headed snakes. The museum activities are rounded off by ongoing special exhibitions, a wide range of museum educational offerings for children and adults, as well as lectures and similar museum programs. After visiting the museum, the cafeteria and a museum shop invite you to linger.
