The Freienfels Knights' Games are the oldest and largest medieval events in Germany. Every year, thousands of active participants and tens of thousands of visitors gather on a total area of ​​130,000 square meters for the benefit of the Freienfels castle ruins. In addition to the sophisticated medieval activities, it is above all the typical Freienfelser peculiarities that have attracted thousands of visitors to the Weiltal for more than two decades: Hesse's largest knight's tournament, the Sunday field service, the family atmosphere as well as the highly chivalrous intention of the event itself: the origin and purpose of the Freienfelser knight's games is the maintenance of the castle ruins. The proceeds from the event go directly to renovation work at Freienfels Castle.
And at their feet, visitors can experience medieval camp life up close every year. Over 1,000 camps in almost 100 authentic storage sites take visitors on a journey into the past. In addition to medieval life and crafts, Freienfels also shows the other facets of the Middle Ages: Numerous jugglers, acrobats and showmen provide entertainment, the market with over 100 artisans and traders invites you to browse and exceptional dishes spread their aroma at dozens of food and drink stands.
Music groups on three stages will play the Middle Ages, and knights will fight for the audience's favor in show tournaments and in free competition on all days of the event. In addition to the dramaturgically narrated tournaments of professional, Hollywood-tested stuntmen, Freienfels offers one of the largest free tournaments in Germany. Nowhere else can you get a more authentic impression of the traditional “cutting and stabbing” of the High Middle Ages.
Originating from the desire of some citizens to protect their castle ruins from decay, the Freienfels Knights' Games have developed over the last quarter century into one of the most respected representations of medieval life. Life and camps, crafts and trade, food and drink, martial arts and juggling are presented in a period from the migration of peoples to the High Middle Ages. The aim of the event is to combine as realistic an insight as possible into life a thousand years ago with spectacular and unforgettable show elements.
The family atmosphere, the varied program and the fascinating insight into the Middle Ages make the Freienfels Knight Games an unforgettable experience and an integral part of the medieval scene in Germany.
