Stone bridge
Before it was built, today's Stone Bridge had several predecessors on the same site. The first bridges crossing the Lahn were made of wood. But already in 1359 the first stone bridge was built under Count Johann I of Nassau-Weilburg. This remained the only permanent bridge over the Lahn between Limburg and Wetzlar for almost 100 years.
After its destruction in 1408 by floods and ice, it was rebuilt, but destroyed again in 1552. Count Philip III. of Nassau-Weilburg had a new bridge built. After the collapse of a bridge arch in the winter of 1698/99, this bridge could be repaired, but its complete destruction on New Year's Eve 1763/64 made a complete reconstruction necessary.
The construction of this stone bridge, which still exists today - 83 m long and 8.65 m wide - was commissioned by Karl Christian von Nassau-Weilburg. The construction took place between 1765 and 1769 under the direction of Johann Friedrich Sckell. A total of 600 trees had to be felled in order to create a grid of posts from their beech trunks and oak planks. This forms the foundation on which the five arches and six pillars of the bridge rest. On both sides of the bridge, wedge-shaped breakwaters are placed in front of the pillars. The formwork and the bridge cladding are made of Lahn marble. In 1770 the bridge was paved and in 1774 the side breast walls were built. In order to reduce the risk of damage to the bridge in the event of flooding, wing walls were built adjacent to the bridge between 1782 and 1785, and between 1787 and 1789, in connection with the construction of the two bridge houses, a flood ditch - which may have already existed earlier - was created by Johann Ludwig Leidner, which led around the bridge houses and accelerated the water drainage during flooding.
An explosion of the bridge by the German Wehrmacht on March 27, 1945 damaged the Stone Bridge but did not destroy it. The bridge was reopened to traffic on November 12, 1946; The restoration work was completely completed in 1948.
