Description Destination

Time of Stone – Time of Man
A museum about granite from the Danube-Vltava region.
Visitors are greeted at the car park by old stonemasons on a remnant of the monoliths that were once intended for the Liberation Hall in Kelheim. You can clearly see the pride these hard-working people take in their skills. Anticipation and excitement are built up on the way to the museum through steel paneling that offers only occasional glimpses into an old quarry. And then you suddenly find yourself standing in front of the huge lettering "GRANITE", a popular backdrop for souvenir photos. When you open the heavy steel door, you are first amazed by the first-class architecture of this house. Granite in all its forms, wherever you look, in the rock face, on the floor, on the ceiling and walls. Stone, steel and wood are the visible building elements. Despite the weight of the stone, you feel lightness and transparency. A short but very meaningful film presentation in the Granite Cinema introduces you to the subject of the gemstone granite. A timeline shows the individual phases in which the rocks were formed. With the latest multimedia technology, you travel 500 million years back in the history of the earth, 15,000 meters into the earth's interior, where hundreds of rock-forming minerals can be admired. The next step leads to the use of the stone. From the Romanesque period through the Gothic period to the present day, the special exhibition "STONE RICH" shows the almost thousand-year-old art of the stonemasons in the Mühlviertel and the Bavarian Forest using display boards, original parts and reconstructions that were made in the workshops of the show quarry. In the outdoor area with rock wall and quarry pond there are blacksmiths, stonemasons' huts and the canteen, where guests can also enjoy the snacks they have brought with them. From the quarry wall, old stonemasons tell of their experiences with the stone that has given so many families their bread. An experience for all guests of the region. Especially for groups interested in local history, tradition, geology and construction technology.
