Description Destination

Welcome to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Naumburg Cathedral!
As one of the most important cultural monuments of the High Middle Ages, the late Romanesque-early Gothic cathedral is a visitor magnet on the “Romanesque Road” and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 1, 2018. The greatest attraction is the west choir with its twelve donor figures. The interplay of architecture, sculpture and stained glass – created by the hand of a sculptor-architect – is a masterpiece of human creativity. The Naumburg Master and his workshop, set up at the beginning of the 13th century, reveal the cultural exchange that was already taking place in Europe during the Middle Ages, as the traces of the workshop can be traced from northwest France through Germany to southwest Europe.
With their liveliness and expressiveness, the 12 donor figures captivate every visitor. Margravine Uta in particular is considered the symbol of the “most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages”. Also impressive are the two high medieval rood screens, which spatially separate the choirs from the nave. Two preserved rood screens in one church are unique in the world! Romanesque and Gothic masterpieces combine with masterpieces of contemporary art to create an impressive ensemble. But there is much more to marvel at in the cathedral.
