The most beautiful excursion destinations in Tyrol

Whether summer or winter, there is always something to experience in the Tyrolean mountains and valleys. As an overnight tip, we recommend a holiday on a farm . 👉 Here are our excursion tips for your family holiday in Tyrol :

Explore the Alpine capital Innsbruck

Beautiful Innsbruck is perfect for a family day out. The city is dominated by the majestic Nordkette mountain range and is not known as the “Capital of the Alps” for nothing.

Treat yourself to an ice cream on Maria-Theresien-Strasse (there are plenty of ice cream parlors here) and stroll to the famous Golden Roof , probably the most photographed balcony in the world. If you're lucky, the silver woman with her little dog will be standing in front of it - a street artist who mimics a living statue. The kids will love throwing a coin into her basket and seeing her reaction.

The best view over the rooftops of the city and the mountains can be had by climbing the city tower near the Golden Roof. You'll get an even better view if you take the Nordkette cable car up the mountain. On the way up, be sure to stop at the Alpine Zoo , the highest zoo in Europe.

Take a trip to the Tyrolean lowlands

For an exciting day trip, you can simply hop on the regional train and explore the picturesque towns and villages of the Tyrolean lowlands . The route down into the Inn Valley towards Kufstein is well worth seeing. Towns worth stopping off at include Hall, Rattenberg (the smallest town in Austria), Kufstein, Schwaz and Kitzbühel .

One of the best things to do in Kitzbühel is to stroll through the town centre. This historic district is built on a long ridge and consists of two parts: the Vorderstadt and the Hinterstadt. Each of the picturesque old streets is lined with pretty old gabled houses, many of which are built in the traditional architectural style of the Lower Inn Valley. There are also wonderful day-trip destinations around Kitzbühel, such as the Aurach Wildlife Park .

Hike across a glacier

There are 5 glaciers in Tyrol that are an experience for the whole family in both winter and summer. You can choose between the Stubai Glacier, the Kaunertal Glacier, the Hintertux Glacier, the Pitztal Glacier and the Sölden Glacier.

In the cold months, the glaciers are covered with fresh snow and populated by skiers. Only in summer is the actual glacier ice visible. Some glaciers, such as the Stubai and Hintertux glaciers , have snow caves with interesting features inside.

If you are visiting in the summer and would like to go skiing, you can still do so on the Hintertux Glacier in July and August. The rapidly retreating glaciers are also a good opportunity to show the children the effects of global warming .

Visit the Swarovski Crystal Worlds and the “House Stands Upside Down”

The Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens are a good option if the weather is bad or if you just want to take a break from the mountains. Most children find the tour through the giant's belly fascinating.

And while mom goes shopping, there is still the huge garden with a crystal cloud, a play tower and the labyrinth to explore.

Not far from the Swarovski Crystal Worlds there is a unique building: The " Haus Steht Kopf " is, as the name suggests, an upside down house built by a Polish architect. Children love to take photos with their "head in the toilet" or "falling up a ladder". The Haus Steht Kopf can be found in a picturesque village called Terfens. The strange house is part of Tirolland , which also houses a dinosaur exhibition .
