What kind of trip can you take with children in winter?

At home outside

First of all, the classics spring to mind: tobogganing , sleigh riding, skiing or snowboarding, perhaps making snow angels, building a snowman or maybe even a snow castle. You get fantastic views when you go winter hiking , the landscape seems enchanted in winter and is reminiscent of the home of the Snow Queen Elsa. Sparkling ice crystals, piles of snow to jump into and maybe even the odd icicle make every hiking route an experience.

There is certainly plenty to do to avoid the sledding hill around the corner, be it an exciting new toboggan run where you can test out the new steering bobsleigh, or perhaps an ice rink where the little ones can have their first go on the runners and you can do a few pirouettes yourself.

If you happen to live in or near a ski resort , or at least in a snowy, hilly or mountainous area, the question often doesn't even arise. But maybe the snow is slow to arrive, or you're not the biggest fan of the white gold yourself. And don't forget: small children in particular often don't find the frozen water as fun as we expect or as the advertisements often make us believe. The annoying gloves slip, your hands are cold and wet, and it's difficult to move at all when you're wrapped up so thickly.

Animals in winter

Many children and young people really enjoy being around animals, whether it's at the petting zoo with dwarf rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. or looking after cows, llamas , alpacas , ponies , or donkeys . Adventure farms are a great place for this; you can help with feeding and mucking out. There might even be the opportunity to go on a hike with your four-legged friend - at the adventure farm in Grödig, for example, you can book a walk with the little patient ponies by the hour. Dog lovers, on the other hand, will get their money's worth on a dog sled ride with huskies. Our absolute best tip here is a visit to the zoo in winter: fewer visitors, but more animals to see.

Indoor action

The seesaw at the playground is frozen solid, the slide is icy and there is snow on the benches. Indoor playgrounds are a wonderful place to romp, climb and jump on the trampoline to your heart's content. Children's birthdays can also be celebrated here! What is often not really thought of and sometimes underestimated is that there are many museums , show businesses or exhibitions . These often have a great range of activities for children, from special audio guides or tours for children to workshops and experiment days. This is also often the case in castles and palaces - here a cute little ghost might haunt the time-honoured halls or the children can try their hand at medieval bread baking or put on a chain mail shirt. If you prefer something less historical and would rather pick locks than visit them, a (virtual) escape room is the right place for you. Solve riddles, solve tasks in record time or find hidden doors - here the ability to deduce, dexterity and speed count.

For little water lovers

Bathing, splashing, sliding down the slides with your brother, sister or friends - all of this is possible in countless thermal baths , swimming pools and water parks . In the heated pools, small children have fun in the baby pools and water landscapes with squirting animals and water games, as do older children who can practice swimming and diving and conquer the diving tower or the slide landscape. Wave pools with swimming noodles, whirlpools and waterfalls - the possibilities are almost endless. After a strenuous game in the water, the chips in the bistros and restaurants always taste the best!

City children

How about a city tour for children? Tailored specifically to the interests and questions of children, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the city and its past. If you prefer to explore the city on your own, perhaps with stops on the bus and (tram) train, you are sure to have a great time here without much preparation.
