Salt mines - three perfect places for heat and bad weather - familienausflug.info
SALT WORLDS

This year, Austrian holiday destinations are very popular. Many families are drawn to the lakes, and the Salzkammergut and the Salzburg area have plenty of them. Our three tips for a summer holiday are perfect for hot and bad weather. There are three salt mine locations in the Salzkammergut, Altaussee and Hallstatt, as well as in the Salzburg area with Hallein.

The “white gold” has always shaped nature, culture and people in the Salzkammergut and beyond. Today, the history of salt becomes an adventure in the salt mines of Hallstatt, Salzburg and Altaussee . Exciting stories about salt await you at original locations deep inside mystical tunnels. A varied family experience!

Salt Mines Altaussee

Mountain of Treasures

There is a lot to experience in Austria's largest active salt mine: tunnels made of pure rock salt, an underground salt lake with a multimedia show , a chapel in honor of Saint Barbara 700 meters deep in the mountain and two miners' slides are among the highlights of the Altaussee Salt Mines. During the Second World War, the tunnels of the Altaussee Salt Mines served the Nazis as a secret art depot. At the original location, the story is told of how courageous Altaussee miners saved the valuable art treasures from destruction.

In July and August there are special tours on the subject of art recovery under the motto "Bombs on Michelangelo". Also in July and August there are children's tours with Sally, the clever pit duck.

The Salzbergbahn takes you comfortably to the spectacular Skywalk "World Heritage View" viewing platform above the roofs of Hallstatt. Across a prehistoric burial ground, you can reach the oldest salt mine in the world in just a few minutes. Here you will find the longest miner's slide in Europe , the oldest wooden staircase in Europe - presented in the Bronze Age cinema underground - and lots of exciting stories about the "Man in the Salt", a prehistoric miner found in 1734. The visit is rounded off with a ride on the mine railway .

On request, there are special tours under the motto “Prehistoric Expedition” through the normally inaccessible part of the salt mountain!

Salt Mines Salzburg

Essence of life – You’ve never seen salt like this before

In the oldest visitor mine in the world, you can experience the more than 2,500-year history of salt, the "white gold" of earlier centuries. You follow in the footsteps of the Celts, but also discover the world of miners from the Middle Ages to the present day. The mine train takes you into the salt mine in a fun and comfortable way, and two long miners' slides lead you to the underground salt lake.

You can also learn more about the importance of salt - as the essence of life - above ground on the Celtic Adventure Mountain. The Celtic village SALINA, the new show factory and a themed playground are best explored in a playful way using the AR research app.

Tip

Our new Destination Guide provides free information and background information with an audio guide, augmented reality function, virtual adventure game and additional salt knowledge (available in the App Store or on Google Play).

Children’s tours with Sally, the clever little pit duck, complement the program.
