Description Destination
There are also treasures in the Army Museum. But it is not gold, diamonds or silk fabrics that await the visitor, but outstanding pieces of the old collection that are unique or extremely rare in the world. Clothing items of a simple soldier from the 16th century, the stalking rifle of Count Palatine Ottheinrich or a guard shield from Ambras Castle in Tyrol. In the centre of a tower room, which is in fact called a treasury, there is a suit of armour from the 14th century, a so-called plate coat. The only known piece of its kind in the world.
But there is also a lot to discover in the other departments of the museum: the staging of a battle scene from the Thirty Years' War, paintings of princes, generals, soldiers and their battles, drawings by contemporary witnesses who witnessed the cruel retreat of Napoleon's troops from Russia in 1812 or a planning model of the Ingolstadt fortress from 1566. Many of the objects are unknown and are presented and explained in detail for the first time.
A special highlight for every visitor, however, is the Ottoman tent, which was captured in 1687 in the Battle of Mohacs in what is now Hungary. Since then it has been displayed as a trophy. Max Emanuel used it at garden parties, Bavarian generals used it during maneuvers and it was also used at the Oktoberfest. Since the founding of the Bavarian Army Museum, it has been one of the central objects of the collection and has always been on display. Since 2021 it can now be seen again in a new presentation. What is new, however, is that the visitor receives detailed information - about the tent, the Grand Vizier from whom it was captured, but also about its later use or where it was seen over the centuries.
The museum's largest exhibit, however, is not the Grand Vizier's tent, but the building that has housed it since 1972: Ingolstadt's New Castle from the 15th century. It is one of the outstanding Gothic monuments in southern Germany and its silhouette dominates the old town of Ingolstadt. The interiors show the splendor of old times - with magnificent ceilings, impressive halls and portals, none of which are alike.
