Description Destination
The Villanders mine was one of the most important mines in the Alpine region in the Middle Ages.
Around 1500, over 1,000 people worked in and around the mining industry, including highly qualified miners, craftsmen and transporters. The Neustift and Säben monasteries were built from the mine's profits.
Most of the tunnels and shafts were dug with hammers and chisels. Black powder was only used later. The miners mined silver, galena, copper, iron pyrite and sphalerite. These metals were processed into tools and weapons, and the valuable silver was even used to make coins.
It was closed at the beginning of the 20th century. The mine fell into oblivion. Members of the culture and museum association renovated it in countless volunteer hours. It has been open to visitors on guided tours since 2000.

Getting there by bus
By bus from Klausen to Villanders to the “Zilderer Kehre”. It is another 15 minutes walk (flat) to the mine.
You can also return on foot, either via St. Anna (marker number 3) and then comfortably via “Gravetsch Castle” to Villanders (approx. 1 ½ hours). Or from St. Anna via the “Erzweg” (past the old “Johannserhof” residence) to Klausen (approx. 2 ½ hours).
Arrival by public bus to the stop “Bergwerk”
Departure from Klausen, train station: every hour 38 minutes after the hour
Departure from Villanders, village square: always 5 minutes before the hour
From Villanders (by car)
The quickest and most convenient way to reach the sightseeing tunnel is by car: turn off towards Villanders in Klausen and drive from the village of Villanders towards Villanderer Alm for about 7 km until you reach the “Zilderer Kehre” (large notice board). Turn right there, after about 500 meters there is a small parking lot for visitors to the mine. From there it is about 300 meters on foot to the “Elisabeth-Stollen”.

Hallo. Ist das Bergwerk wirklich Kinderwagen geeignet?
Christian F. asks-
