Description Destination
Original exhibits, authentic rooms, models and multimedia presentations bring the fascinating world of castles to life in the German Castle Museum, which is unique in Europe. In sixteen rooms with over 350 exhibits, visitors learn about the diverse functions that castles have had or still have over the centuries and how the castle residents spent their everyday lives in castles between war and peace.
Developments in castle architecture are illustrated by a variety of scale models: while early castles often resembled fortified farms, some princely castles of the late Middle Ages reached impressive proportions with several courtyards, high towers and magnificent residential buildings.
Original weapons, pieces of armor, archaeological finds such as arrowheads and unique objects such as a medieval storm ladder present the theme of siege and defense. One of the main exhibits is the staging of two fighting knights with original armor.
The tour through the rooms on the upper floor of the Heldburg provides insights into a noble chamber, everyday life in the castle lords' parlor and the festively decorated hall. The life, learning and play of children within the castle walls is also highlighted.
The fact that the history of castles does not end with the end of the Middle Ages is proven by the castles that continued to be used as family residences, hunting lodges or official residences with judicial functions.
The Romantic era rekindled enthusiasm for castles. Landscape pictures with picturesque castle ruins, castle souvenirs, illustrated castle guides and toy castles represent the interest, but also the myth of the castle.
