A rarity in industrial history
The still operational precision mechanical workshop of the Fellenbergmühle, which was set up in 1927 in the former grinding mill founded in 1767, is today a rarity in industrial history. The workshop character has been preserved even after the renovation has been completed.
The apparent tangle of machines and transmission belts creates an atmosphere that immediately captivates visitors to the workshop. For example, you can: The “Cardan wedding ring engraving machine”, developed and patented by the founder of the precision engineering company in Merzig, Johann Peter Hartfuß, in 1931, can still be used today to engrave the desired initials into the ring in just a few minutes.
The company itself produced the energy needed to drive the machines using a turbine. The dammed Seffersbach is still the energy supplier today. The precision engineering operation at Fellenbergmühle impressively documents the transition from artisanal to industrial production methods with the essential characteristics of factory work.
The professional and exemplary renovation of the Fellenbergmühle was awarded the Saarland Monument Preservation Prize in 1997.
