Graz Clock Tower Graz The tower is a landmark high above the city.Something is not right here. What is wrong with the clock face of the Graz clock tower? A faulty landmark? Not at all! If you look for a while you will immediately notice that time has a different meaning here. Hours count more than minutes, and rightly so, because the space beneath Graz's landmark is magical, and when you turn around and let your gaze wander over the gardens and the city, you'll understand why. The Schlossbergbahn takes visitors up the Schlossberg, Graz's local mountain, in just one and a half minutes. An even faster way to reach the clock tower on the Schlossberg is to take the Schlossberg lift. Or you can climb the Schlossberg on foot - 260 steps lead to the summit and from the top you have a wonderful view over Graz. Our tips for walks: Walk "Over the roofs of the city"Walk "Over the mountains - right in the middle of the city!"In our folder "Moving through the city" or online you will find even more route suggestions for hikes and walks in the city of Graz.Let's get out and have fun - discover Graz in summer now! The history of the Graz Clock TowerA tower at this point on the mountain was already mentioned in the 13th century. During the refortification of the castle hill in the middle of the 16th century, the tower received its current appearance. The hands on the mighty clock faces often cause confusion. Do the clocks run differently in Graz? No. The fact that originally there were only large, clearly visible hands for the hours and those for the minutes were added later resulted in the hands being swapped. The clock mechanism, which Michael Sylvester Funck built in 1712, still works today, but has been electrically operated since the middle of the 20th century. When there were fires in the city, the fire station at the clock tower rang the fire bell. It is one of the three remaining bells of the tower (1645). The oldest bell in Graz, cast in 1382, strikes the hours. The "poor sinner's bell" (around 1450) was rung during executions. In later times it reminded night owls of the curfew, which also earned it the nickname "rag bell". At three corners of the tower there are coats of arms that once adorned the fortifications of the Schlossberg: the Styrian panther with the Duke's hat of Styria (around 1570), the single-headed eagle as the coat of arms of the later Emperor Ferdinand I (1552) and the double-headed eagle with the initials of Maria Theresa (second half of the 18th century). The mighty Bürgerbastei, on which the clock tower stands, had to be defended by the citizens of Graz in times of war - as its name suggests. Today it is home to a magnificent garden with flowers, some very southern plants and numerous benches. To linger and enjoy the view of the city and beyond.Historical information about the "Stone Dog"Not far from the clock tower on the road downhill, the "Stone Dog" stands guard. According to legend, in 1481 the barking of a dog saved the emperor's daughter Kunigunde from being kidnapped by the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, who had unsuccessfully courted the princess's hand.
