Description Destination
On the grounds of the “Scherer” millstone quarry, a simple house built in 1802 by a stone-mining family has been preserved almost in its original state. The house was carefully restored in 2007 and opened as the Millstone Museum Steinbrecherhaus. The house gives a good insight into the living conditions of ordinary people in the 19th century. Documents, tools and products of the stone breakers and millstone cutters are presented in a small museum room. An original stoneworker's hut has been rebuilt in the outdoor area, where various millstones are on display.
The Millstone Museum not only illustrates the history of the extraction and processing of Perg millstones, but also stone milling, the grinding of grain. Millstones made from different types of stone for different grinding processes demonstrate the diversity of grinding. The new highlight of the museum is the “Meisingermühle”, which was moved from the Maltatal to Perg!
For centuries, the Perg millstone cutters were the most important producers of millstones in the Austrian lands. Since the Middle Ages, millstones have been carved out of the particularly hard Perger sandstone. The guild was so important that Emperor Rudolf II confirmed its craft regulations in 1582. He also granted the privilege that if a millstone quarry was found in the country above the Enns, it could only be used by the Perger millstone breakers.
