At the Spohr Museum, families can learn about the life and music of Louis Spohr, who was court music director in Kassel 200 years ago. On the second floor, you'll find more about Kassel's musical history: from Heinrich Schütz and Gustav Mahler to beat and punk, all the way to techno. And because Louis Spohr was an outstanding violinist, you can try out the following at our interactive stations:

how violin strings made of sheep gut, metal, and plastic feel,

how the weight of different woods used to make a violin varies,

see how a violin vibrates, and

watch the strings move in slow motion while you play a violin yourself.

You can also try out how a piano key works. Spohr was also one of the first conductors to use a baton. Would you like to show the instruments in our virtual orchestra who should play next?
