During Advent, the entire town center of Grossarl is transformed into a cozy Advent village. Around 30 small huts made from old wood offer handicrafts and specialties from the region.
Advent like it used to be
With shining eyes, the children stand in front of the life-sized village nativity scene and marvel at the figures carved from pine wood. In the Christmas forest, they discover the most diverse forest animals, while next door a few little ones go round and round on the historic carousel.
From next door, the sweet smell of roasted almonds and gingerbread wafts over, while on the other side, children are grilling sausages on skewers at the campfire. Singers and musicians sing old Christmas songs, accompanying the steady crackling of the fire, which is only occasionally interrupted by the ringing of bells from passing horse-drawn carriages.
Lovingly designed children's program
A lot of attention is paid to children at the Salzburg Mountain Advent. The little ones diligently take part in the children's program with a cookie bakery, Christmas workshop, angel post office, fairy tale room and angel photo studio. The "Christmas forest" with carved animal figures, pony rides, the living animal nativity scene and of course the barbecue at the campfire are particularly popular.
Close to nature
Nature lovers are drawn to the end of the valley, where wonderful winter hiking trails, idyllic horse-drawn carriage rides and, of course, the two inns Talwirt and Bauernladenstüberl beckon at the entrance to the Hohe Tauern National Park. (Tip: Mask exhibition in the basement of the Talwirt inn and “Bible Trail” at the Bauernladenstüberl).
When and where does the mountain advent take place?
The Advent market is located in the two communities of Großarl and Hüttschlag, about 70 km south of the Mozart city of Salzburg. The market is open on all 4 Advent weekends from Friday to Sunday and on December 8th.
