One week in Vorarlberg: Our 7 excursion tips for the region

As is often the case, our vacation takes us to the far west of Austria. Grandma and grandpa are already eagerly awaiting their grandchildren and have lots of plans for them. This regularly gives us the chance to get to know Vorarlberg's beautiful family outings.

A week of dream weather

The late summer holiday week with my wife's parents began on Sunday and ended on Saturday. Autumn showed its best side all week long. Therefore, the focus of our activities was on outdoor locations. Nevertheless, we managed to avoid one or two bad weather programs. The excursion destinations were all a hit and therefore get our warm recommendation.

Our tips:

1. Wildlife park in Feldkirch
   Here you will find everything you need for a hot day in late summer with children: large animals, small animals to pet, a playground, lots of forest and shade and a great view. Entry is free, but be sure to bring 20 cent coins with you, as some of the animals can be fed with the food available from the vending machines. Some dwarf goats already know this and come very close to visitors!
   
   
   
2. Schattenburg Feldkrich
   If you want to visit the historic town of Feldkirch - and it is definitely worth a visit - you should definitely plan a visit to the Schattenburg. A museum and particularly large schnitzels await young and old there. A good alternative even in bad weather!
   
   
3. Boat trip on Lake Constance
   Boats regularly sail from Bregenz across Lake Constance. In just 20 minutes you can reach the wonderful town of Lindau with its famous harbor entrance (lighthouse and Bavarian lion) and the beautiful old town. If you would like to chug across the Swabian Sea for a longer period of time, you can also travel to Friedrichshafen (two hours) or even to Konstanz (four hours). An experience for all ages!
   
   
   
4. Hike through the Rappenloch Gorge
   Not a trip for parents with a fear of heights. The footbridges lead 30 meters above the Dornbirner Ache in some places. After a rockslide, the old footbridges in the lower part of the gorge are no longer accessible, but this does not detract from the experience. A tiny-looking excavator in the gorge and gigantic rocks are reminders of the collapse of a rock face in 2011. Several waterfalls and the Staufensee reservoir at the end of the gorge are further highlights. There is a kiosk and toilets at the lake, as well as a good place to play in the mud or water.
   
   
   
5. Rolls-Royce Museum and Nativity Scene Museum Dornbirn
   At the entry point to the Rappenloch Gorge there are other excursion destinations that are perfect for less sunny days. The Rolls-Royce Museum is a must-see for fans of motorized transport and the Nativity Scene Museum displays exhibits from all over the world.
   
   
6. Hike to Alpwegkopf (cover photo)
   Above the hustle and bustle of the Rhine Valley, there is a romantic alpine idyll that is also easy to reach for families with small children. From Furx (municipality of Zwischenwasser), the hike takes one to one and a half hours up to the Alpwegkopfhaus. You cross forests, meadows and pass an alpine pasture before the final climb to the guest house begins. Children who enjoy walking can probably manage the hike themselves from the age of 3.
   
   
7. Sunnahof Tufers
   The integrative farm in Göfis is a great destination in many ways. Children can get up close and personal with the animals on the farm, there is a playground, agricultural machinery can be admired and there is a restaurant. The products from the gardening and carpentry shop are well worth seeing and can be purchased on site.
   

Of course, Vorarlberg has a lot more to offer than the seven destinations listed, but unfortunately every holiday week comes to an end and we'll discover the rest next time.
